New Level 1 (Part 1) Formula Summary Sheet available

Hi,
I wanted to ask about calculators and which one you emphasize. I am a HP-12C person. Do you show tutorials more for TAs or HPs?
Thank you,
Mike

Hi Mike,

We currently have (3) tutorials utilizing the TI BA II+.
You may find this helpful as well: http://www.bionicturtle.com/faqs/ca...at_is_the_best_calculator_you_would_recommend

Thanks,
Suzanne

Hi Suzanne/ David

Saw your below link on calculator usage.

I too am a Texas Instruments fan,
One thing I found out using the TI BA II+ professional while writing the CFA level 1 is that the buttons jam and calculations had to be started over again. Indeed it has a studier body and changing the battery is easier without a screw driver. So for CFA level 2 I got myself just the TI BA II. Find it easier to punch in numbers. Carry both for the exam

@Mike: While I am planning more TI BAII+ tutorials (now that TI gave us an emulator, I am so excited to be able to actually show the calcs!), I am not currently planning HP tutorials. For two reasons (aside from my time is finite)
  1. I perceive the TI BAII+ to be more, if not far more, common (popular) for the exams. This is my anecdotal observation, I admit, I would love to see data ...
  2. As the HP is basically geekier, and I mean that in the fondest possible way (eg., RPN), HP users tend to know how to use their calculators. It seem like the audience for calculator tutorials is beginners and the TI has a shallower learning curve (for exam purposes anyway)
Here is also a thread with helpful input: https://forum.bionicturtle.com/threads/calculator-options.5235/

My summary view is:
  • TI is easier to learn for the exam
  • However, due to lack of RPN, you could argue the TI is maybe less robust to pilot error b/c you have to track the parens or use the STO variables. If I have to re-do calcs, the #1 reason is because i forget where i am in the nested parens (in practice, this often causes me to resort to the STO/RCL when i test my own questions). The TI calculator basically engenders a bit of "parenthesis insecurity" in me!
  • Intermediate/advanced users seem to prefer, if not widely, the HP and HP users seem to find the time invested very worthwhile
  • To Alek's point, to my knowledge, the HP20b is the ONLY exam valid calculator with built-in CDF and inverse CDF for the four sampling distributions (e.g., inverse normal CDF). This will not matter for the exam, but IMO I could see this saving time in the PREP.

Actually, the HP 10bII+ also has the CDF and it's inverse. It is also less expensive than the HP20b. I think it's time to put away the tables - we don't use the logarithm tables anymore, because there really is no need to [so why use them for distributions when the answer will be imprecise?].

Hi Dave,

I purchased FRM 1 Tier 2 material. I read through T1a Foundation. I am looking for practice questions where can I find these? please help.

MikeCass,

We are currently working on meeting our deadlines for the focus reviews. After the focus review we will revert our attention to the Formula sheets. Thanks!

Suzanne

I did'nt found mentioned topi practice questions , can you plz help me out
Allen, Boudoukh, and Saunders, Chapter 2: Quantifying Volatility in VaR Models ..

salman Mustafa Baig,

Unfortunately, we are unable to be current on all practice questions every year. David currently writes practice questions daily. Unfortunately, it does not appear that we have been able to get to that chapter within Quants. There will not be any new AIM based practice questions this year. As soon as we receive the new curriculum from GARP (December/January timeframe), we will analyze the changes from 2012 to 2013 and create a calendar/schedule based on the workload.

Thanks for your understanding.
Suzanne
