Maybe playing devils advocate on this but surely GARP are considering that the May exam dates are at risk when considering the Coronavirus. Has anybody heard anything from GARP at all on this?

From what I am reading across forums like Reddit etc is that there is very little likelihood for them to cancel. At most they may cancel exams in regions heavily affected. Interested to hear other thoughts.

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but with all the commotion about the coronavirus does anyone know what GARP's stance is on this? The exam rooms are typically packed with a whole bunch of us candidates and depending the spread/infection rate of this virus, it might not be conducive to hold this exam in such a large group

I would be interessted as well to have GARP's insight on this but so far no response on my request - in Switzerland the government just announced a temp. ban on assemblys up to 100 people till the end of April 2020 - if this extends this certainly will touch base with the exams..

Happy to hear other toughts and keep your hands kleen!

Maybe it's a bit too soon to say that! But the Virus has got pandemic and it might not go away in a foreseeable future! So maybe in the next month, they announce their decision.

Hello everyone,
I emailed GARP with my concerns about the exam of May 2020 and they sent me this reply back:

Dear Candidate,

Thank you for your inquiry. Please note that GARP takes the safety of our candidates and proctors very seriously and that we are monitoring the coronavirus situation very closely. Please review the below press release which has outlined GARP's current response. And also we don't change the current exam schedule. However, We will let you know if it's necessary to cancel to defer the exam in May. The deadline to change your exam site is April 15th.

Please be advised that if there are any further updates that candidates will be notified. You may also review the GARP website for updates as well.

Management's recommendation is to check in again with GARP at the end of March to confirm the most current response to the situation.

Sincerely,

In the Netherlands gaatherings above 100 people are also prohibited. The exam room can fit many more people and it's in a hotel in the middle of the most touristic place in Amsterdam.

Thank you @Evangelia_Mintzai2 for copying GARP's response. The wording of these two sentences is awkward to me: "And also we don't change the current exam schedule. However, We will let you know if it's necessary to cancel to defer the exam in May."

Sounds awkward to me too. Btw, GARP gave just 1 day notice for candidates in Hong Kong, when they cancelled it last Nov in response to the ongoing political situation there.
I hope they come up with a decision asap, people need to plan things way ahead especially now that we have a global pandemic.

Hopefully this will be clearer in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, I still have a few chapters to study :)

Getting back to the main topic, I'm really getting used to the new Study planner. Easier to navigate.

Have a nice Sunday.

I think with the CDC's recommendation that for 8 weeks there cannot be a group larger than 50 people in room is going to put a lot of pressure on GARP given the number of people in the exam room at a time. I will definitely continue calling and emailing until they give me an answer so us candidates don't spend 250 studying for an exam which is going to be cancelled.

just got a similar repsonse:

"Dear Candidate,

Thank you for your inquiry. Thank you for your inquiry and thank you for sharing your concern regarding the May 2020 exam. Please be advised that GARP is closely monitoring the Coronavirus situation. Please rest assured that GARP has candidates' health and safety in mind and that we will be sure that any decision made will ensure the safety of all candidates and exam staff.

A final decision on the May 2020 exam has not been made due to the rapidly changing nature of the situation, but we intend to have a decision in the coming weeks. Please monitor your email and the GARP website for any updates.

If you have any other questions and concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Member Services at GARP."

Just writing here so I can follow news. Thank you.
I just wanted to point out the "Watch" feature at the top of every thread. If you click Watch on any thread in the forum, you have the option to receive email notifications every time someone posts in the thread. This will help to minimize the "posting to get updates" comments within the threads ;)

@corinne.lieberman21

Just remember that no study hours are wasted. If they cancel the May exam, there is still the November exam so, either way, those 250 study hours are definitely not a waste of time. We aren't memorizing here, right? We are learning not only for the exam, but also for the real world so these concepts need to be learned in-depth no matter when you take the exam.

Globally, everyone is very stressed about this pandemic and I'm sure it is very hard for companies to make the call to cancel or continue their operations. Since the exam is in May, it is very difficult to predict what the situation may be at that time. I think the best thing to do is to continue with your studies at this time. Continuously contacting GARP will unfortunately not make them come up with a decision any quicker. I'm sure they are doing what they can to make the decision without the outside influence of FRM candidates. We all just need to do what we can to lessen the stress around us.
